Red-Bellied Woodpecker - Week 33 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

Image
By the time I got to this fellow, I was feeling pretty good about the Mijello paints.  I definitely prefer to use them after they've dried rather than fresh from the tube.

Something got on this paper before I started painting, so I kept it as loose and simple as I could, knowing the paint wouldn't take well in some places.  That's one of the drawbacks of painting in a journal.  You end up getting splashes from other work, and if you forget and set it down without closing it first, you pick up oils and dirt, especially if you do everything at the same table the way I do.

I used the Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set. and Silver Black Velvet Brushes Round size 6 and size 16.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

My reference photo came from the Morguefile archive.

Autumn Watercolor Class #Watercolor #Strathmore #Mijello

Image
This was done for the third session of my Autumn Watercolor class.  We were studying flowing water.  I lost some of my white because I got the water values darker than I meant to, and in trying to lift some of the color, I just smeared it instead.

This is a common problem of mine that stems from impatience.  I tried to lift the color before the paint was entirely dry, plus I used too large a brush.  On of these days, I'll get my act together.

I was using my Mission Gold pure pigment set, and I'm still learning how to mix the colors.  It amazes me how the yellow pigments are strong enough to show up when glazed over some of the darkers colors, while still being reasonably transparent.

The Plover - Week 31 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

This was my second painting using the Mijello Mission Gold watercolors and I was starting to loosen up a little bit.

Nicobar Pigeon #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

Image
For Week 30 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds', I chose the beautiful Nicobar Pigeon.  I'm a bit disappointed with it, though.

This was the first painting that I did using my Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set, using freshly squeezed paint from the tube, and I found a bit harder to spread than expected.  It was also the first painting I did after a hiatus of a couple of months, and it is always difficult to get my brain and hand working in co-ordination.

I did like how easily I could obtain the darkest values, and the brilliance of the colors.

I used a Silver Black Velvet Round size 6 and size 16.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

If you are here for the Stillman & Birn Beta Series Softcover Edition giveaway, you can find it and my review here.  The giveaway ends tomorrow at 11:50 pm PDT.

To round out the week of sharing work done in my Stillman & Birn Beta series softcover, I did another watercolor.  I used lots of water for this one, with no buckling, curling or pilling.  I was able to lift color easily as well.

I think the Cuttlelola Electric Dotspen and Stillman & Birn Beta paper were made for each other.  It's so easy to build up the solid values quickly.  This drawing took about 2 hours, and that includes the time spent planning and penciling in the outline of the sheep.

Betafish on Beta Paper #Stillman&Birn #ColoredPencil #BetaSeries

If you are here for the Stillman & Birn Beta Series Softcover Edition giveaway, you can find it here.

I was asked if I had used Stillman & Birn's Beta paper for colored pencil, and the answer is yes.  Many times.  Colored pencil isn't my favorite medium so I didn't use it for my review earlier this week, but it's a good question.  I was also curious to see how well the dots from my Cuttlelola electric pen would show up under colored pencil, so I drew this picture...

...and colored it with colored pencil.  Kind of a waste of the Cuttlelola ink because most of the ink was lost, which I suspected, but ya never know till you try.

Color pencil itself works well on the Beta paper, though I prefer the Stillman & Birn Alpha series paper for it.  The paper allows for several layers of color and burnishes well for deeper color and blending.  I used a white acrylic pen to add some highlights.

My favorite sketchbooks are from Stillman & Birn.  They have different editions, each with different paper, and my favorite of the papers is their Beta version.  They recently came out with soft covers and I decided it was about time to buy one of the landscape editions.  While I was at it, I decided to buy a smaller edition to give away.  I can afford the postage on the smaller one, so this giveaway is international. Stillman & Birn sketchbooks are my favorite for pen and ink drawings.  I used my Cuttlelola Electric Dotspen to create this drawing in one of their Beta Softcover editions.  Not sure if I'll color it or not.

The View From My Window #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #Strathmore

Image
One beautiful morning while I was drinking my morning cup of Joe and staring out the patio window, I wondered why I haven't painted this view for while.  I could think of no good reason, and set out to do so.

Our house isn't quite as close and the painting implies, and I left out all the pesky houses that border the lake, but, otherwise this is pretty close.
Painted with Mijello Mission Gold pure pigments on 8x11 Strathmore Aquarius II watercolor paper using Silver Black Velvet Brushes, size 16,& 6 rounds and 1 inch flat.

Review: Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set #Mijello #MissionGold #Watercolor

Image
Between a flare up of my bad wrist and a busy summer, I've done very little artwork at all for the last few months.  I hate that.  When I start up again, it's like there is a disconnect between hand and brain and it takes a while to get back into the flow.

After reading a review at the FrugalCrafter website (the link is at the bottom), I decided to purchase a  Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set, to help get myself in a creative mood.  It worked!

First things first.  There are SO many watercolor sets on the market.  What makes this particular set of interest?  There are twenty-four 15 ml tubes and two 5 ml tubes.  And every color in the set is made with one pigment.  A one pigment color is considered 'pure'.  It's more likely to be highly lightfast, more intense, and less likely to make mud when you mix it with other colors.

Mijello makes a point of the fact that their paints have excellent dispersion and solvency, which means the paint dissolves and …
